Heavy hydrocarbon cutting

Heavy hydrocarbons are produced by combining feedstocks with flash points above 40°C, such as 400-family solvents and raffinate, with industrial oils. The resulting product, which is in the carbon range of C10 to C25 and consists of paraffinic, naphthenic, and aromatic functional groups, with a viscosity of approximately 800-840 kg/m3, is often known as gasoil or diesel fuel.

Production process

The raw materials, which are supplied as middle distillate fuel from the refinery with a boiling point of 150 to 400 degrees Celsius, are transported and discharged via tanker. Then, in accordance with the proportions formulated in the laboratory, they are injected into the production line tanks and thoroughly mixed with each other using circulation pumps.

Finally, after performing strict quality control, the final product is loaded into transport tankers.

Features and Benefits

This process, especially in the production of heavy paraffinic hydrocarbons, is considered a by-product and is not suitable for use as gasoline due to its low octane number. However, due to the long carbon chain, it plays an important role in the synthesis of detergents.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heavy Hydrocarbon Cutting

What is heavy hydrocarbon cutting and what compounds does it consist of?
Heavy Hydrocarbon Cut is a distillation cut from crude oil refining that mainly consists of alkanes, cycloalkanes, and a limited amount of aromatics in the boiling range of 180 to 380 degrees Celsius. Due to its high density and suitable flash point, this cut is widely used in the fuel, lubricant, and petrochemical industries.
The main difference is in the distillation temperature range and molecular weight of the compounds. The light cut has shorter molecules (C5–C10) and a lower boiling point, while the heavy cut contains longer molecules (C11–C20) and a higher density. For this reason, the heavy cut is more suitable for fuels, base oils, and slow-evaporating solvents.
